The people who build and run PhoneShield

Written and kept current by the team behind PhoneShield, a sister company of Byte Federal, whose staff spent years meeting scam victims at cryptocurrency ATMs with the scammer still on the line.

Why a second line

Your real number forwards every call to PhoneShield. When a call passes the front desk, PhoneShield has to ring you somewhere, and it cannot ring the number that is forwarding, because that would loop straight back. So vetted calls land on a second line: any spare number, or a cheap eSIM on the same phone.

The second line only ever receives calls from PhoneShield, with a short whisper naming the caller. Nobody else knows it. It needs talk and text, not data, so the cheapest plan a carrier sells is enough.

Already carry a second phone of your own?

A second phone only you answer, or a spare line on your own plan, works. Skip to Tell PhoneShield. Not a relative's phone or a shared work line: the calls PhoneShield lets through would ring them instead of you.

Pick a plan

Any carrier that sells an eSIM works. These four are inexpensive, activate in minutes, and do not need a store visit. Each card opens the plan at that price. Prices checked September 30, 2026; PhoneShield has no arrangement with any of them.

Your phone needs to support two lines at once: any iPhone from the XS (2018) on, and most Android phones from 2020 on. In the checkout, choose eSIM rather than a mailed SIM card, and choose a new number rather than transferring one.

Add the eSIM on iPhone

  1. Finish the carrier's checkout on the phone itself. Most carriers then show an Install eSIM or Activate button; tap it and iPhone opens the installer.
  2. If you were sent a QR code instead, open Settings, tap Cellular, tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code and point the camera at it.
  3. When asked which line to use by default, keep your existing number as the default for calls, texts and data. The new line only needs to receive calls.
  4. Wait for the new line to show signal bars in the status bar. It usually takes under a minute.

Add the eSIM on Android

  1. Open Settings, tap Network & internet (Samsung: Connections), then SIMs or SIM manager.
  2. Tap Add eSIM or Add mobile plan, then scan the carrier's QR code or use the carrier's app.
  3. Keep your existing SIM as the default for calls and data.

Label the lines

Give the new line a name you will recognise, such as Private. On iPhone: Settings, Cellular, tap the line, Cellular Plan Label. On Android the name field is in the same SIM screen. When a vetted call arrives, your phone shows that label, so you always know it came through the shield.

Find the new number in the same screen; you will need it in the next step.

Tell PhoneShield

  1. Open the setup page and enter the new number as your private line.
  2. Press Confirm with a code call. PhoneShield calls the new line, reads four digits, and you type them in.
  3. Then forward your real number and run the forwarding test.

That is the whole setup.

From now on scammers never reach you, favorites ring the new line straight through, and everyone else meets the front desk first.

Questions people ask

Will the private line ring all the time?

No. It rings far less than a normal phone. Scammers are refused before anything rings, and strangers have to explain themselves first. The private line only rings for favorites and callers with a real reason, each with a short whisper saying who it is.

Can I use a second phone I already own?

Yes, if you carry it and answer it yourself, such as a second phone or a spare line on your own plan. Enter its number as the private line and confirm it with the code call. No eSIM needed.

Can I use my brother's phone, or a work phone other people answer?

Not a good idea. The private line is where PhoneShield sends the calls meant for you. If it is someone else's phone, they get your calls: your doctor, your bank, your friends. Use a number only you answer.

Why can't PhoneShield just ring my normal number?

Because your normal number now forwards every call to PhoneShield. If PhoneShield rang it, the call would forward straight back in a loop. The private line is the one number that does not forward, so the good calls can land somewhere.

Does the eSIM replace my number or my phone?

No. Your everyday number stays exactly as it is, for calls, texts and data. The eSIM just adds a second number to the same phone, and the phone rings on either one. Never turn off or delete the everyday line.

Does the second line need data?

No. It only receives calls, so the cheapest talk-and-text plan is enough, from about $5 a month.

Who else knows the private line?

Nobody, unless you share it. That is the point: a scammer cannot call a number they have never seen. Keep it private and PhoneShield is the only caller it ever hears from.
